The Toronto East Quadrant Local Immigration Partnership (TEQ LIP) in partnership with various community partners are very excited to present: Immigrant Employment T.O. Day 2019!
We want you to join the celebration!
Immigrant Employment T.O. Day celebrates immigrant’s contributions to the Canadian economy, highlights resources and showcases innovative projects that connect employers and immigrant talent to prepare newcomers to succeed in Canada’s labour market.
The I E T.O. Day initiative is designed to inform Canadian newcomers with the latest labour market trends and provide a professional forum for newcomers to engage and network with Canadian employers. This event is an excellent community development opportunity for service providers, employers, immigrants and local businesses to contribute to the meaningful economic success of Canadian newcomers.
Events will take place throughout the year and will include interactive and informative panel discussions led by industry experts, networking meet ups, workshops and knowledge exchange sessions. It aims to offer platforms for learning, partnership-buildings and further increase awareness of information and practical resources available to support newcomer employment and economic opportunities.
Future of Work – Looking Forward and Beyond Newcomer Employment
This year’s theme will focus on the Future of Work – Looking Forward and Beyond Newcomer Employment. With the rise of AI and technology, the workplace culture is more dynamic than it has ever been. And, newcomers will need to learn how to position and maximize opportunities to enter this ever-changing labour market. Toronto is home to hundreds of small tech start-ups and this provides an extraordinary opportunity for newcomers to enter the workforce. I E T.O. Day 2019 will showcase successful Canadian tech start-up companies which have provided an enriching work experience that parallels the experience provided by larger celebrations. As we celebrate through the community, events will encompass technology, self-care, diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
Celebrating the Future of Work for Newcomer Professionals
The TEQ LIP and various community partners celebrated their official launch of Immigrant Employment T.O. Day 2019. The event took place on Thursday June 20th, 2019 at the Cedarbrae Library in Scarborough. And it was quite the celebration! With the rise of artificial intelligence and technology, the theme highlighted the “Future of Work: Looking Forward & Beyond Newcomer Employment”. The new wave in technology has certainly impacted the tech industry creating vast opportunities for newcomer professionals. Toronto is now home to hundreds of small tech start-ups. Newcomers will need to learn how to prepare and leverage these opportunities to integrate. Invited guest speakers, such as, Fayzal Samji – Director of Employment & Literacy Programs of the Labour Education Centre, Radwan Al-Nachawati – Co-Founder of LinkMentalHealth, Yousuf Khatib -CEO and Founder of Global Skills Hub and Darryl Julott – Senior Manager of Digital Main Street, provided insightful and enlightening perspectives on what they see happening on the ground, what programs and services are out there to support newcomers in these times of change and the skills needed, while others shared their experiences of working for or operating a start-up.
So what does the future of work look like for newcomer professionals? Well… Interestingly, there seems to be an increasing need for women in technology, they are currently taking the industry by storm. Soft skills seem to be the main ingredient for those who wish to transition into the sector.
The celebration doesn’t end there. Organizations, service agencies and local businesses are encouraged to participate and organize their very own events in honour of I ETO Day 2019. It will continue throughout the year.
A big thanks to all of the speakers that came out to celebrate the I ETO Day 2019 launch event. A special thanks goes out to all volunteers and the I ETO Day Planning Committee for putting the event together.
